In the Hunan Kunqu Opera Drunken Monk Storming the Mountain, the actor playing “Lu Zhishen” performs a set of fluid yet powerful leg movements. That’s the renowned "Eighteen Arhat Leg Techniques."
As the name suggests, this sequence combines eighteen distinct leg movements, such as kicking, thrusting, pushing, sweeping, and swinging, executed in a strict order. The entire routine has to be performed on one leg, seamlessly and without a pause.
The technique demands tremendous leg and waist strength. The performer must kick high, straight, and swiftly, while keeping the upper body steady and graceful. So each held pose resembles the powerful and sculptural beauty of Arhat statues in temples, which is how the technique has earned its name.
